A+ | East Jakarta - In a warm and cordial atmosphere at the Bawaslu building on Tuesday, June 9, 2024, commissioners from the East Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu/Badan Pengawas Pemilu) welcomed members of the Indonesian Cyber Media Union (SMSI) East Jakarta Branch, for a friendly exchange and collaboration discussion.
Led by Commissioner Taufik Hidayatullah of the East Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), alongside Prayogo Bekti Utomo and a head of the Bawaslu secretariat Mrs. Faradilla, the meeting took place in the Chairman's conference room, symbolizing a significant step towards bolstering electoral oversight through media engagement.
Taufik Hidayatullah, commissioner and Coordinator of the Prevention, Community Engagement, and Public Relations Division at the East Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), highlighted the indispensable role of media in their oversight responsibilities. "We greatly value the media's role in publicizing our oversight tasks, especially through participatory monitoring via media channels and engagement with community stakeholders," Taufik expressed warmly.
Prayogo Bekti Utomo, Commissioner of the East Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency overseeing Legal Affairs and Dispute Resolution, emphasized the need for concrete collaboration aimed at enhancing transparency in information dissemination aligned with their oversight duties.
"In essence, we are open and recognize the pivotal role of media in our efforts. Contentious issues and participatory oversight are crucial, involving media, communities, and interested groups," Prayogo elaborated, illustrating short-term engagements where SMSI could participate, enriching their conceptual approach to reporting and other relevant aspects of participatory oversight, with a strong focus on prevention.
Faradilla, the Head of Secretariat at the East Jakarta Election Supervisory Agency, discussed technical aspects related to enhancing the official publications of Bawaslu, emphasizing potential collaborations with SMSI to increase public understanding.
In attendance from East Jakarta Indonesian Cyber Media Union (SMSI) were Chairman Wisnu Wicaksana, accompanied by Secretary Mahar Prastowo and Documentation and Public Relations Officer Topan. Wisnu affirmed SMSI's commitment as the umbrella organization for digital media in Jakarta Timur, pledging support for transparent, honest, and fair democratic processes.
"We aim to foster a closer collaboration with Bawaslu on multiple fronts, including enhancing election transparency, combating hoaxes and misinformation, upholding journalistic ethics among SMSI members, and promoting voter education," Wisnu expressed.
He further underscored SMSI's readiness to work alongside Bawaslu in disseminating accurate and reliable information to ensure informed citizen participation, particularly in the upcoming Simultaneous Regional Head Elections on November 27, 2024.
Recognizing the pervasive challenge of hoaxes and misinformation in the digital era, Wisnu reiterated SMSI's commitment to partnering with Bawaslu in detecting and countering false news that could undermine electoral integrity.
Regarding internal critique, Wisnu highlighted SMSI's openness. "We aim to uphold journalistic standards during election coverage and support Bawaslu in overseeing the regional head elections (Pilkada) to ensure compliance with regulations," he stated.
The role of media in educating voters is pivotal, with Wisnu emphasizing their responsibility in contributing to voter education efforts to enhance public awareness of rights and responsibilities in elections. He expressed SMSI's willingness to involve its members in electoral workshops to deepen their understanding and ability to effectively inform the public.
"In closing, we seek to ensure that SMSI members have sufficient understanding to effectively communicate election-related information to the public," Wisnu concluded optimistically, signaling a promising partnership aimed at reinforcing democratic values and integrity in east Jakarta.
